SPATIO-TEMPORAL PATTERNS OF AMBIENT AIR POLLUTION LEVEL IN ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA

Since the sources of air pollution is diverse, urban areas spatio-temporal patterns of ambient air pollution level needs to be investigated for public health importance. Because of limited research and weak early warning system, the risk of morbidity and mortality of ambient air pollution is increasing in urban areas. More recently, 80% of people living in urban areas are exposed to air pollution levels that exceed WHO limits. Ambient air pollution is responsible for about 3 million deaths and 85 million DALYs. In developing countries, 13 million annual deaths of children below the age of five years have been recorded due to air pollution related disease.
This study is aimed to assess spatio-temporal ambient Air pollution level of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The design for this study was a mix of ecological and repeated cross-sectional study designs. Four Criteria air pollution level indicators were measured in terms of PM2.5, PM10, NO2 and SO2 at lowest spatial resolution (1km*1km) of Addis Ababa covering 542 km2 areas. Due to security issues and geographical barriers of 150m buffer zone, some sample points were excluded and 441 sample points were used to collect data within daily range of Rush hours, Normal daily hours and Night time.
According to 95% of space-time kriging predictor, average concentration of Addis Ababa ambient air pollution level in terms PM2.5, PM10, NO2 and SO2 were 53 ± 1.176 µg/m3, 104 ± 1.96 µg/m3, 158 ± 3.92 µg/m3, and 86 ± 4.9 µg/m3 respectively. Furthermore, the aggregated Air Quality Index (AQI) of Addis Ababa is 125. In both cases, compared to WHO air pollutant limit values, the average concentration and aggregated AQI are above the allowable limits.
Spatial and temporal exposure beyond allowable limit of ambient air pollution is increasing in Addis Ababa. Linking ambient air pollution level with health outcomes is recommended to plan space and time specific interventions. Furthermore, air pollution standards should be set for polluters so that it could be enforced by regulatory body.
